Yoga Nidra
Yoga nidra, which literally translates as yogic sleep, is both a process and a state. It is a form of meditation, normally done lying down, where we are guided into a borderline state between waking and sleeping. Whilst its OK to fall asleep during a nidra practice, the aim is to keep some level of consiousness and awareness. Whilst we are in this borderline or liminal space, we are able to explore a different consciousness, tap into our creativity and create postiive change within us. It can be deeply relaxing, incredibly healing, and ultimatly very restorative for those of us who don’t get enough rest and sleep in our lives.
Before practicing a nidra there are a few things that are helpful to know
There is no wrong way to do a nidra, just lie down, relax and listen.
Whilst its good to keep some level of awareness, its OK to fall asleep if that is what the body needs.
Its best to try and stay still, if you have an urge to move try and resist for a moment, if you still need to move then do so mindfully and slowly so as not to disturb your nidra practice.
Try and find a moment and space in your life where you won’t be disturbed during your practice, and pick a good time of day that is going to work for you.
The main this is to enjoy and relax!
